Apparently, I need to pick a lane.

I own a consulting business.

I’m also looking for the right opportunity to return to an FTE leadership role.

I’ve been told that combination may confuse recruiters.

And you know what? They may be right.

But this isn't a new career experiment for me.

I’ve spent my career moving between FTE roles, consulting, contracting, and entrepreneurship. The common thread has been solving difficult organizational problems and leading change.

I suspect a lot of Gen X careers look more like mine than the traditional career ladder we were told to climb.

We lived through the dot-com crash. Layoffs. The Great Recession. Offshoring. Entire industries are being reshaped by technology.

We adapted because we had to.

Sometimes that meant taking the corporate job. Sometimes it meant consulting. Sometimes it meant building the job ourselves.

So I wrote about it.

The business card changed. The work didn’t.

Fellow Gen Xers, I’m curious: Did you follow the straight line we were taught to follow, or did life send you somewhere you never expected to go?
